Monarch Butterfly(모나크 나비)의 신비

[거사주]:  얼마 전에 Tom Hanks가 설명하면서 북미 및 중남미의 자연을 소개한 NBC 프로그램에서 모나크 나비에 대한 에피소드를 보고 매우 놀랐다. 우리가 통상적으로 생각하는 나비는 포물선을 그리며 매우 느리게 가까운 거리를 날아가는 걸로만 알고 있었는데 모나크 나비의 생태를 자세히 조사해 보니  그 적은 뇌에 인간의 첨단 비행기기보다 더 월등하고 다양한 슈퍼 기능이 있으니 그저 매우 놀랄만한 신비로 가득 차 있다.

1. 수명:  대략 9 개월인데, 8~14일동안 번데기( Chrysalis/Pupa) 포피에서 성체가 되어 나온다.

2. 상상불허한 장거리 이동:  북아메리카에서 한 여름을 지내다가 무려 3,000~4,000 마일을 날라서 멕시코의 El Rosarino Sanctury, Michacan으로 이동하여 11월~다음 해 3월까지 지내다가 알을 까고 다시 북 아메리카로 이동하면 수명을 다 한다.

3. 이동시 걸리는 시일: 보통 하루에 50~100 마일이나 어느 종류는 265 마일을 날라서 대략 2~3 개월이 걸린다.

4. 얼마나 높게 올라가서 이동하나?: 기온이 차가우면 날개 근육 기능이 저하되어 바람속도, 기온, 시간대에 따라 다르지만, 보통 240~360 m이고, 기온만 맞으면 2,400~3,600m에서도 날아간다고 하니 매우 경이롭다.

4. 남쪽으로 이동중에 Nectar가 많은 곳에서 에너지를 충전하고 밤에 무리 지어 나무에 매달려서 쉬고 아침에 다시 날아간다.

5. 어떻게 정확한 장소로 날아가는가?: 주로 북아메리카에서 지내다가 가을이 되면 해가 남중하는 고도가 낮아지고 일조량이 줄어들면서 기온이 내려가면 제일 좋아하는 Milkweed가 현저히 줄어들어 남으로 대이동 하는 때가 온 걸 인지한다. 

Monarch butterflies navigate their long-distance migration using a combination of internal and external cues, primarily relying on an internal compass that integrates time of day and the sun's position. They also appear to use a magnetic compass for direction. 

Here's a more detailed look at their navigational strategies:

• 1. Sun Compass:

  Monarchs use their eyes to perceive the sun's position and a clock in their antennae to track the time of day. This allows them to maintain a consistent direction, especially during the fall migration south. 

   
• 2. Magnetic Compass:(또한 지구 자장외에 흐린날에도 태양의 편광을 인지하고 정확하게 날라간다.)

  Studies suggest that monarchs possess a light-dependent magnetic compass, allowing them to navigate even on cloudy days. 

   
• 3. Geographical Features:

  Monarchs also appear to use geographical features to guide their migration. For example, eastern monarchs tend to fly southwest, potentially influenced by geographical barriers. 

   
• 4. Environmental Cues:

  Monarchs respond to seasonal changes like decreasing day length and dropping temperatures, triggering their fall migration. 

   
• 5. Nectar Sources:

  Migratory monarchs rely on the nectar of fall flower composites that lie along their migration path for energy.

   

   6. Genetic Information:  Monarchs inherit the ability to migrate, meaning they don't learn the route from previous generations. 

          7. Super Generation: The fall migration is undertaken by a single generation of monarchs that live much longer than regular monarchs, allowing them to complete the entire journey.
