<거사 해설>

 

이 영화는 영국의 감독/연출을 한 Sam Mendes가 1차 세계 대전에 참전했던 그의 할아버지한테 들은 얘기를 근저로 만든 것으로, 대부분의 등장인물은 허구다.  2시간이라는 매우 길고 지루한 영화지만, 많은 상을 휩쓸었다. 주요 plot 요지는 독일군이 작전상 후퇴한 걸 모르고 몰살 위기의 함정에 빠지게 되는 1,600명의 영국군을 구하기 위해서 William Schofield/Tom Blake 하사를 미션이 거의 불가능한 독일군이 장악한 지역을 거쳐서 여단장에게 전면적인 공격을 중단하라는 밀서를 받고 떠나지만, 도중에 동료인 Tom Blake는 추락한 독일군의 비행기에서 구해낸 조종사가 갑자기 휘둔 칼에 찔려 죽게 되고 Schofield는 천신만고 끝에 사선을 넘어서 메시지를 전달하는 내용. 마지막 씬에서 그는 Blake의 형인 Joseph중위에게 유품을 전달하며, 홀로 나무 밑에 앉아서 "우리에게 돌아 오라-" 라고 뒷면에 쓴 가족사진을 꺼내보면서 상념에 젖는다.

1917 is a 2019 war film directed and produced by Sam Mendes, who co-wrote the film with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Partially inspired by stories told to Mendes by his paternal grandfather Alfred about his service during World War I.

 

On 6 April 1917, aerial reconnaissance has observed that the German army, which has pulled back from a sector of the Western Front in northern France, is not in retreat but has made a strategic withdrawal to the new Hindenburg Line, where they are waiting to overwhelm the British with artillery. In the British trenches, with field telephone lines cut, two young British lance corporals, William Schofield, a veteran of the Somme, and Tom Blake, are ordered by General Erinmore to carry a message to Colonel Mackenzie of the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment, calling off a scheduled attack the next morning that would jeopardise the lives of 1,600 men, including Blake's brother Joseph, a lieutenant.(-)
